Tech radar

What we use,
what we trial,
what we hold.

A visual guide to the technologies we adopt, trial, assess, and hold across our cloud, DevOps, and AI engineering practice — including LLM tooling, vector databases, and AI-augmented delivery. Updated quarterly by the team.

— What this is

A reading of the engineering landscape —
made for ourselves, shared in public.

What is the Tech Radar?

The Diatom Labs Tech Radar is a list of technologies, complemented by an assessment result called ring assignment. We use four rings:

ADOPT
Technologies we have high confidence in to serve our purpose, also at scale. Production-grade, low risk, recommended.
TRIAL
Technologies we've seen work on real project work — first serious usage that confirms benefits and surfaces limitations.
ASSESS
Technologies that look promising and are worth research and prototyping. Higher risk, often brand-new in our org.
HOLD
Technologies not recommended for new projects. Existing usage may continue, but we're steering away.

What is the purpose?

The Tech Radar is a tool to inspire and support engineering teams to pick the best technologies for new projects. Based on the pioneering work of ThoughtWorks.

How do we maintain it?

The radar is maintained by Diatom Labs' DevOps team. Ring change proposals are discussed and voted in team meetings; the radar depends on active input from every engineer here.

If you'd like to make your own radar, Zalando has open-sourced the code that powers this visualization.
